Elon Musk’s plan to put a few thousand Twitter employees out of work is progressing at a ferocious pace. platformer casey newton reports that employees received an email on Thursday evening telling them they would know by 9 a.m. PST on Friday if they still had jobs. That information will also be conveyed by email, in a move that is almost as ruthless as the layoffs themselves.

“Thank you for continuing to abide by Twitter’s policies, which prohibit you from discussing confidential company information on social media, in the press or elsewhere. We appreciate your contributions to Twitter and your patience through this process.” Is grateful.”
Newton reports that Twitter employees are posting saluting emoji to the company’s Slack — a farewell and a gesture of respect for their colleagues as the ship goes down. They’re also sharing Thanos memes, comparing Musk’s massive staff cuts to the Marvel supervillain’s plan to kill half the universe’s population.
Although the email was unsigned, it is no mystery who was behind it. Musk has been vocal about wanting to lay off a significant number of Twitter’s workforce as quickly as possible, starting to literally lay off people the day its acquisition was finalized. Reports differ on how many of Twitter’s 7,500 employees will lose their jobs if Musk says so, though it is estimated that number could reach as high as 75 percent.
Musk has been trying to squeeze more money out of Twitter after initially attempting to back out of a $44 billion acquisition deal. These massive staff cuts are integral to their efforts, along with a deluge of wildly unpopular changes to the platform.
These layoffs are dire and will likely have a negative impact on Twitter’s quality, but hopefully some employees will find this a blessing in disguise. collins report With the culture on Twitter “beyond toxic”, some are expecting the layoffs to get severance.
Between Kasturi’s unreasonable deadlines, overworked employees having to sleep in the office and the threat of unemployment constantly looming over everyone’s head, it’s no wonder people are looking for the door.
